According to Pest World, 75% of bedbug infestations are found in hotels and motels. These nasty little creatures are small insects that feed on the blood of animals or humans. They can lay hundreds of eggs in their lifetimes, each one the size of a tiny speck of dust. In this video, Jim Dill of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension demonstrates how to look for bedbugs while traveling. Jim has a ton of helpful tips on where and how to look for bedbugs in your hotel or motel room.
When most people enter their hotel room, they walk right over to the bed and/or luggage rack and throw their bags down immediately. This is a big no-no, as these are the place where bedbugs are most commonly found.
Instead, Jim says you should place your luggage in the bathtub upon entering your hotel room, then take the necessary steps in inspecting your room. Check the bed’s backboards. Check along the piping of the mattress. Check inside the bureau. Bedbugs typically exist within 20 feet of their host, so chances are they’ll be right on the bed or in the nightstand. Also check for small bloodspots and fecal spotting, which are signs that the bedbugs have been feeding.
