While the Rio Summer Olympic games are currently taking place, it’s amazing to think that the first Olympics took place in Greece back in 1896.
Since then, the event has taken place in 19 different countries and the production, and construction, is always immense. With the enormous production value, built for the duration of only a few weeks, have you ever stopped and wondered what happens after the Olympic games are over? After all, this isn’t just some simple carnival that rolls into town and is erected in a day, then broken down a few days later when it leaves. These are massively constructed structures which are built so that the best athletes in the world can perform in them. Well it turns out many of these Olympic stadiums end up so massive and complex, that they end up becoming completely abandoned. Check out the remains of these stadiums and see how nature has taken them over, and how some are creatively using these structures today.
1. Bobsled Track, Sarajevo, 1984 Winter Olympics Venue
The abandoned track on Mount Trebevic, near Sarajevo, is seen here in September 19, 2013. Left to crumble on it’s own, this is pretty much the common sight among the other venues of the 1984 Winter Olympics.
2. Bobsleigh Track, Sarajevo, 1984 Winter Olympics.
Look at how some creative thrill seekers are recycling the old bobsleigh and luge track at Mount Trebevic, and the Mount Igman ski-jumping course and related infrastructure. Downhill bikers Kemal Mulic, Tarik Hadzic and Kamer Kolar have some training sessions on the graffiti-covered concrete remains!
3. Olympic Village, Athens, 2004 Summer Olympics Venue
Here is an abandoned training pool which was for the athletes at the Olympic Village.
4. Swimming Pool, Berlin, 1936 Summer Olympics Venue
This is the swimming pool from the 1936 Olympic village in Elstal, west of Berlin. Then under Nazi rule, it was used as barracks for the German army afterwards. From 1945 on it was used as barracks for Russian officers. The Russian army’s final withdrawal was in 1992 and here’s a view of the pool and how it looks now.
5. Ski Jump Tower, Cortina D’ampezzo, Italy, 1956 Winter Olympics Venue
The Dascher technique came about here by Swiss jumper, Andreas Dascher. Dascher figured out that if the competitor held his arms at his side, they would end up flying much farther. Sure enough, those who did the technique, dominated the competition.
6. Ski Jumping Tower, Grenoble, France, 1968 Winter Olympic Games
Totally abandoned, but still a beautiful view.
7. Olympic Sports Complex, Sarajevo, 1984 Winter Olympics Venue
Now it’s been turned into a graveyard.

12. Olympic Mascots Lie Unwanted, Beijing, 2008 Summer Olympics
Here’s two of the five mascots for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Nini, left, and Yingying. They now live behind trees, left to rot. A symbol of the many venues now falling into disrepair, with other projects left incomplete after the games ended.
13. Olympic Village, Berlin, 1936 Summer Olympics Venue
These once housed the athletes, but now remain deserted.
14. Olympic Flag Posts, Athens, 2004 Summer Olympics Venue
Weeds now grow around the once spectacular sight.
15. Barricades Outside The Stadium, Athens, 2004 Summer Olympics Venue
Like shopping carts outside an abandoned grocery store, these barricades remain to rust and decay outside of the Athens stadium.
