When Carlos Alonso and his sister Camino were looking for a country home for their extended family, they stumbled upon an abandoned stable in rural Spain. The stable — which was crumbling and dilapidated — was situated high up on a hill and miles away from city water or an electrical grid. It was certainly no luxury estate, but the brother-sister duo decided an incredible transformation was indeed possible.
The Alonsos kept much of the old stable in tact, keeping in tribute to the generations of cattle ranchers that laid the foundation for a new-and-improved living space. For example, the facade is still the original stone, and the southern exposure allows for the sun to be the main source of heat during the winter. The original watering trough became a fountain and patio where water helps cool the warm summer temperatures. Large wooden shutters open and close like a “second skin,” trapping the solar heat gain. The Alonsos turned the hay lofts into bedrooms. But perhaps the most fascinating part about this home? After filtering it and letting it rest, the property’s water supply is so pure that the Alonsos can use it for drinking and bathing. Just amazing.
