Irritated by the sound of chewing? Here’s what’s really happening.

There’s nothing more annoying than that guy or girl next to you at the cafe who is one of those “loud chewers.” They make a big production out of their food chewing, usually with their mouth wide open as well.

Well, it turns out there is actually a condition for those of us who can’t stand the sound of chewing, or annoying sounds in general. It’s called misophonia and it affects creative individuals who tend to have “atypical attention.” In other words, they can’t filter out all the random noises like other people can.

This isn’t really a negative condition, as you can use your atypical attention to really zone in and focus on rich experiences that are more meaningful than, say, a stranger chewing his or her food! You tend to have a greater appreciation of the experience since your attention is so focused.

So next time you are next to a food chewer, try zoning in your atypical attention on something else. Or just put your headphones on and be done with it.
